Overcoming Writer’s Block in Four Easy Ways

December 23, 2022

Almost every writer experiences periods when they feel blocked and are unable to write. This feeling can be frustrating and discouraging, but it is a normal part of the writing process.

There are several ways writers can overcome writer’s block. However, you first need to know yourself to understand the causes for the block and choose the right strategy.

These simple strategies are easy to implement and do not require any paraphernalia. So, writers can start to break through the block and get back to what they should be doing in the first place: writing!

If you are struggling with writer’s block, keep reading for four tips to get out of it!

1. Write Something Else or Shift to a Different Genre

If you’re struggling with your current subject, try writing in a different format, genre, or niche.

Sometimes, getting out of your comfort zone can jumpstart your creativity and help you break the creative stagnation that typically comes from working on the same project for too long.

Of course, not all writers will find this approach effective. Some may prefer to struggle through their block, hoping they’ll eventually find a way through it.

However, for those struggling to find any inspiration at all, writing on a different topic can be a great way to get the gears rolling. You could also go back to your old pieces or blog posts for inspiration or to add as a foundation. You’ll be surprised at how much your past work could inform your current one.

2. Read Other People’s Work

Experiencing writer’s block can be frustrating, but there are things you can do to push through it. One of the best ways to overcome writer’s block is to read other people’s works.

You can see how they approach problems and solve them. You can also get a feel for their style and voice, which can help you to find or refine your own. Additionally, reading can give you a much-needed break from writing and help refresh your mind.

So next time you feel stuck, try picking up a book or two. You may be surprised at how helpful it can be.

3. Go Somewhere to Write

Although it may seem counterintuitive, one of the best ways to overcome writer’s block is to change places. Sometimes a change of scene is all you need to get those creative juices flowing. So if you’re feeling stuck, try changing location, whether it’s a different room in your house, a different building entirely, or even a different country.

You could also try writing at a different time of the day or in another format (like a journal instead of a document). Sometimes a small change is all that’s needed to get you back on track.

4. Do Something Else Other Than Writing

One approach is to take a break from writing and do something else entirely, like  going for a walk, taking a nap, or simply relaxing. Doing nothing at all does actually work.

Writer’s block can be extremely frustrating but try one of these approaches and see if it works for you! If you’re looking for help overcoming your writer’s block and become a published author contact Elite Online Publishing today!
