10 Reasons Why You Need to Write a Book

10 Reasons Why You Need to Write a Book

by Jeff Pinkerton – October 19, 2016

It really got my attention when I read the statistic that 81% of adult Americans, at one time or another, have a desire to write a book. That number seems extremely high, doesn’t it? But then I started reflecting on how many times I’ve heard someone say, “I should write a book on this or that”. My guess is, at some time or another, you’ve probably had a similar thought. Maybe as you are reading this that thought is crossing your mind?

As one who has been through the process, I urge you to take action on that little voice that keeps nudging you towards writing “that” book. Whether it’s a book built around a “how to”, a cookbook, a novel, a biography, on travel, etc., there is a reason you hear that little voice. To me, the sad part is we leave too many books in the “to be written” category in our minds.

I’ve found there are ten great reasons you need to write “that” book.

  1. 1. It can crystalize your thinking. Engaging in the writing process will cause you to crystalize and clarify your thoughts. I think you’ll be amazed at how fragmented thoughts in your mind can be crafted into a work of art.
  2. 2. It can establish your platform. The quickest way to establish your platform is to write a book. A book gives you instant credibility to share your stories, experiences, beliefs and philosophy.
  3. 3. It will help someone else. If your book will help one person, it’s worth the effort. It’s been my observation that helping one person leads to helping others.
  4. 4. It can expand your influence.  A book gives you the opportunity to expand your message far beyond the paths you walk every day.
  5. 5.It will hone your verbal skills.  Bringing clarity to your thoughts in a book will help you verbally communicate more effectively in all areas of your life.
  6. 6. It might have income potential. For most of us, writing a book won’t result in a lot of income, but who knows, until you test the waters? You may well pen the next best seller.
  7. 7. It’s a great resume addition. Adding that you authored a book to your resume often puts you in a class by yourself.
  8. 8. It’s not as hard or expensive as you think. We live in a time when book publishing couldn’t be easier. Self-publishing companies have created an easy and affordable way to publish your book.
  9. 9. You’ll learn a lot. You’ll be amazed at the knowledge and education you’ll gain through the book writing experience.
  10. 10. You’ll leave a message for those that follow. One of the greatest gifts, and maybe one of the most important that you can leave your family and those who follow you, is by memorializing your words and thoughts into a book. Words in a book will last far beyond your time on this earth.

I truly believe inside every one of us is a story to be told. If you feel that story needs to be told in a book, write it. What you may think of as only “common knowledge” will become “uncommon wisdom” when shared in a book.

As always, if I can help you in any way, let me know. – JeffPinkerton.com

It’s a Writer’s Market: Digital platforms have emerged

It’s a Writer’s Market: Digital platforms have emerged

It’s a Writer’s Market

Digital platforms have emerged to serve midlist authors.

Bloomberg Businessweek
May 26, 2016 — 1:56 PM MDT

For Greg White, the last straw came when his publisher forgot to ship copies of his book to the launch party last October. It was just one in a series of lost marketing opportunities, says White, co-host of the Food Network show Unique Sweets. So he decided to take his book back. After getting his contract canceled, he turned to the editorial marketplace Reedsy to redesign The Pink Marine, his memoir about life as a gay serviceman. The author, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif., formed his own imprint, AboutFace Books, and cut a distribution deal with Ingram Content Group. “Five years ago, self-publishing was a scar,” White says. “Now it’s a tattoo.”

A new generation of online editorial services and self-publishing platforms is fueling that change in perception. The upstarts offer skills and services that used to be available only through traditional publishing, plus favorable royalty splits. They also allow authors to retain the copyright to their work. The array of offerings is spurring some writers to leave their publishing houses—particularly midlist authors whose books receive scant marketing support. Some are also using the new services to put out e-book versions of their out-of-print titles.

Janice Graham used Amazon.com’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform to release digital versions of her five novels, including 1998’s Firebird, a New York Times best-seller. For a novel in progress, she hired an editor through Reedsy and plans to self-publish unless a publisher offers her a good deal. “I’m not so interested in the prestige of being published by a traditional publisher at this point,” says Graham, who lives in Florence, Italy. “What I’m interested in is maximizing sales.”

Reedsy is a community of about 450 handpicked publishing professionals available for hire. The two-year-old London-based company offers software that allows authors to collaborate with editors without having to e-mail manuscripts back and forth. Reedsy co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Nataf says he had an epiphany when he got his first Amazon Kindle e-reader: “The barriers to publishing had been removed.”

Self-published titles account for almost half of all e-book purchases in Amazon’s Kindle store, while e-books from the five largest publishers represent just a quarter, according to the website AuthorEarnings. Still, demand for digital titles has weakened somewhat: E-book purchases—which average $4.95, compared with about $15 for trade paperbacks—peaked in 2014, when they made up 36 percent of the publishing market. They’ve since declined, as consumers with digital fatigue return to print, according to Peter Hildick-Smith, founder of Codex-Group, a consulting firm in New York City. “I believe the market is now in more of a steady state,” he says.

To compete against traditional publishers, self-publishing platforms target specific niches and offer authors terms their old-line competitors can’t match. Pronoun, formed last year by a merger of three companies, is free for authors to use, distributes their e-books to Amazon and other online retailers, and doesn’t take a cut of their sales. (Traditional publishers typically keep 75 percent of an e-book’s net profit.) Pronoun only negotiates revenue-sharing agreements with authors who use its editorial and marketing support. “Where publishers make guesses, we run the numbers,” says Josh Brody, CEO of Pronoun, based in New York City. “We apply advanced data science and analytics to help authors price their book competitively, get it into retailer categories that provide the highest visibility, and tag their books so they show up in the most popular and relevant reader searches.” (Pronoun was acquired by Macmillan Publishers for an undisclosed sum after this article went to press.)

Leanpub gives technology writers the ability to publish in-progress works. That way, they get feedback from readers and earn royalties while they’re writing. The company, in Victoria, B.C., takes a 10 percent cut plus 50¢ on each sale through its online store. “If you’re writing about an area that changes quickly, your only hope of being relevant is to publish quickly,” says Leanpub co-founder and author Peter Armstrong.

Meredith Wild, an author of erotic fiction based in Destin, Fla., snagged a $6.25 million advance from Grand Central Publishing’s Forever imprint last year for five novels—four of which she’d already self-published. Forever had sold about 500,000 copies of the books through January, compared with 1.5 million Wild sold before the deal through her own aggressive marketing. That differential is one reason she’s gone back to publishing her work—along with that of other writers in the genre—under the imprint Waterhouse Press, which she started in 2014. “It’s more of a personal investment of time and money to have my own team,” she says, “but at the end of the day, I like being able to call my own shots.”

Self-publishing isn’t for everyone. “It’s definitely like running your own business, and not everyone is up for that,” says the author, who uses the e-book creation software Vellum. “For those who are, it’s a great way to publish on your own terms.”

The bottom line: A number of self-publishing platforms are wooing established authors by rewriting the industry’s contract terms.

Where do you Self Publish Your Books?

Where do you Self Publish Your Books?

In order to see your book all over the web, you should publish your book for Print and Ebook!
We use Createspace for our Book Distribution!

Expanded Distribution offers you the opportunity to access a larger audience through more online retailers, bookstores, libraries, academic institutions, and distributors within the United States. • Bookstores and Online Retailers – make your book available to online and offline retailers such as Barnes & Noble and to distributors such as Ingram and NACSCORP.

What Being A “Bestselling Author” Really Means

What Being A “Bestselling Author” Really Means

There’s a big difference between being an author and being a bestselling author. Whether you are a business owner, a speaker, or a full-time author, being able to call yourself a bestseller dramatically increases your credibility. But what does that really mean?

To become a bestseller, you must appear on a bestseller list. Of course, The New York Times is one of the most famous of these lists, but there are many others, including: ABA IndieBound (ABA), The New York Times (NYT), Barnes & Noble (BAN), Publishers Weekly (PBW), The Boston Globe (BOG), USA Today(USA), The Denver Post (DPO), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), The Los Angeles Times (LAT), WalMart.com (WAL), BN.com, and Amazon.com.

To draw from a personal example, some of my books have been on the Top 100 Amazon Bestselling Teen List and the Top 100 Amazon Bestselling Hot Releases in Teens. One of my books has a ranking in the 300 range for overall books sold on Amazon, while three have been in the 400s out of over 1 million books. (For more details, here is a complete breakdown of my Amazon bestsellers.)

What does this mean? It means that my books, because of the rankings they received at one point on Amazon, were popular enough to be on the bestseller list. For a book to rank #300 on the overall Amazon ranking means that, out of over 1 million books on Amazon, only 299 sold more copies.

However, the New York Times bestseller list is different. Not to better or worse…just different. It’s a different metrics system. No one knows exactly how this is compiled, but large publishers know certain things about getting onto the list, and that’s why you find many of the large publishers’ books on there. It is a well-known fact among publishers that the New York Times gets its book sales data from a scattered few bookstores (like the Nielsen’s) and it doesn’t take into account the actual sales of the books (which Amazon.com does in order to rank), but how many books were shipped to these particular sampling of stores in anticipation of sales.

The New York Times list heavily counts sales in select brick-and-mortar stores, so if your books aren’t in these particular bookstores, then chances of making the New York Times bestseller list are minimal. And being not as comprehensive as Amazon.com in the amount of titles overall (typically brick-and-mortar bookstores can only carry within each store itself on the average 175,000 titles) versus the 1 million plus titles Amazon.com carries, these brick-and-mortar bookstores are not able to carry all book titles to compare sales. Just last year, the New York Times began counting online sales along with books that are in brick-and-mortar. According to certain publishers and industry insiders, it takes about 20,000 books ordered during a week at these select bookstores to have a chance at the New York Times bestseller list. Savvy publishers, usually the top ones, know which bookstores. The rest of us have to guess. However, to many authors, including myself, who have sold well over 20,000 books (for me, just the Frost Series alone was over 20,000) on Amazon alone, that is a surprisingly low number. It’s nothing to sneeze about, but when you think New York Times, you typically think the book must have sold more than anyone else in all avenues, including the number one book on Amazon.

Another important difference is in the timing, as the New York Times compiles their list based on a week’s performance of a book, while the Amazon list is compiled by the hour.

Does being on Amazon.com’s bestselling list actually mean you are selling more than being on a New York Times list?

In some cases, yes. It boils down to Actual Sales (Amazon.com) vs.Anticipated Sales from select bookstores (New York Times).

While it is wonderful and prestigious to be called a New York Times bestselling author, and I applaud any author who does become one, it doesn’t mean that authors on other bestselling lists are not bestselling authors as well.

It simply means their books did not ship enough or fast enough to one of the bookstores The New York Times pulls data from.

John Locke and Amanda Hockings sold over a million books on Amazon.com. While John Locke made the New York Times list (he had the #1 bestselling book, Saving Rachel, for weeks on Amazon.com, and the rest of his series were bestsellers, he made the New York Times list, too. He also had paperback books out in stores, which can explain why he made the list). Amanda Hockings is an Amazon.com bestselling author, who did not make the New York Times bestselling list (despite selling over a million books. I know a lot of New York Times bestselling authors who are friends, and they didn’t come close to selling 1 million books like Amanda Hockings did).

So you see, the New York Times list is not always a reliable indicator of book sales.

The publishing and book world are facing some changes and challenges these days. Amazon.com is thriving. Bookstores are closing, which is very sad for many of us who grew up with a bookstore in every neighborhood.

Perhaps those who have a bias against Amazon.com and BN.com should rethink that bias and realize Amazon.com and BN.com are doing something right in this new age of publishing and reading. Savvy literary agents and publishers realize when scouting for their next big author star to look towards Amazon’s self-published authors. Amanda Hocking was discovered that way, as well as Colleen Houck, whose Tiger’s Curse books were Amazon bestsellers.

A lesson learned from watching and observing bestseller lists for anyone, including those who are writing non-fiction business books, is to take what you read, including New York Times lists with a grain of salt, as opposed to other lists.

But of course, if my books or any of my friends’ books make the New York Times bestseller list or the Amazon lists, it’s a cause for celebration.
