Amazon just added five more languages to its self-publishing platform, increasing its engagement with India. Now, writers uploading their books to Kindle Direct Publishing can publish their books in Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi, or Tamil.

The company has been investing more heavily in the Indian book market lately. Earlier this year, Amazon launched Kindle Lite, a 2G version of the Kindle reading app, so that India’s many millions of 2G mobile users would have access to the platform. Just last month, the company launched Prime Reading, the program allowing Prime members access to e-books on an unlimited basis, in India.

This month’s development focuses on the content creation side. Now that Amazon is working on boosting its e-book customers, it’s apparent the company is looking to ensure that there’s an increasing amount of e-books available to non-English speakers in India and to English speakers who prefer to read in one of India’s many official languages.
