Publicity Tips For Authors
Start Earlier Than You Think
Most authors are still writing their manuscripts when the pitching process for media interview opportunities should begin. It’s recommended to start at least 4-6 months before the book launch date, sometimes even up to a year, depending on the author’s goals. Particularly with podcasts, some of the biggest shows are booked out 3-4 months in advance. That means, if they said yes to interviewing you today, it’ll be about four months before the interview gets published. Start much earlier than you think you need to. That way, you’ll have enough time to line up a significant amount of interviews and get pre-orders for the books, which help with hitting various bestseller lists.
Mix Up Your Media Outlets
Include a mix of both traditional and online media outlets. Particularly if you haven’t done any publicity before, it’s important that you have the credibility from being featured on mainstream media outlets. Having those “as seen on” media logos (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, Forbes, Inc, Entrepreneur, etc) carries a lot of weight with readers, and makes you automatically more credible in their eyes. In addition, if you have another offer that you’re selling to your readers on the back-end (e.g. a coaching program, Mastermind, software, live event, etc), it’s recommended that you interview on podcasts.
